how to spot a fake black friday deal in South Africa

Updated 22 October 2026

Short answer: a Black Friday deal is only real if the final total, delivery included, is lower than what you would have paid a few weeks earlier, from a store you can verify. Check the price history, the delivery cost, the store's details and the returns policy before you pay. Black Friday 2026 is on 27 November.

1. Check the price, not the percentage

A big percentage off a price that was raised in October is not a saving. Save screenshots or notes of the prices you care about in early November and compare on the day.

Price-comparison sites can show you what an item cost over the past few months.

2. Look at the full total, with delivery

Some deals make up the difference in delivery fees that only appear at the last step. Before you pay, look at the total, not just the item price.

On our site, home finds ship for R99 per order (free with a selected combo), and Baby & Kids items show the live courier price for your address at checkout, before payment.

3. Make sure the store is real

Copycat sites copy real stores' logos and prices. Check the web address carefully, look for a physical contact number and a returns policy, and pay through a known payment gateway rather than a bank transfer to a stranger.

Be careful with links in SMSes and "your parcel is waiting" messages, which spike around Black Friday. Go to the store's site yourself instead of tapping the link.

4. Know your rights before you buy

South African law gives you seven days to cancel most online purchases. Read the store's own returns policy too: ours gives you 14 days to return unused items.

Set a budget before the day. The cheapest deal is the thing you did not need to buy.
