how to get pet hair off your couch — for good
Updated 7 October 2026
If you share your home with a cat or dog, you share your couch with their fur. Here's a routine that actually keeps on top of it — tackling the fur already on your furniture and cutting down how much ends up there in the first place.
1. Brush your pet more often
Most of the fur on your couch is loose undercoat that would come out with a good brush. A few minutes of brushing a few times a week catches it before it lands on the furniture.
A steam pet brush makes this easier: the fine mist helps lift loose fur and loosen tangles, and many pets tolerate it better than a dry brush.
2. Use a reusable roller instead of sticky sheets
Sticky lint rollers work, but you keep buying refills and binning sheets. A reusable pet hair roller has a fabric surface that grabs hair as you roll it back and forth; you open it and empty the collected fur straight into the bin.
3. Vacuum the crevices
Fur collects in seams and between cushions. A small cordless handheld vacuum gets into those gaps quickly — and it's handy for the car seats your dog loves too.
4. Cover their favourite spot
Put a washable throw where your pet likes to sleep and wash it weekly. It's far easier to shake out a blanket than to de-fur the whole couch.
5. Keep them hydrated and healthy
A healthy coat sheds less. Make sure your dog always has water — especially on walks in the South African heat. A leak-proof water bottle with a built-in bowl makes that easy, and it's included in our Pet Grooming Kit. If shedding seems excessive, check in with your vet.
